Next to Shiogama, Matsushima town and Bay is considered one of the 3 famous views in Japan and Matsushima Bay consists of over 260 islands. The area has been revered for hundreds of years for its beauty in all 4 seasons. There are several boat tours available including a regular line between Shiogama and Matsushima town, taking a scenic route around some of the islands. The sight seeing ferry terminal is located in front of Shiogama's new "Marine Gate" complex.
The Marine Gate complex includes a selection of restaurants which combine the freshest seafood with a view overlooking the harbor for relaxed dining, an outdoor deck and observation platform, and many shops and stalls selling locally produced foods, goods and souvenirs. Taking a local ferry line from the Marine Gate docks, visitors can also stop off and explore Shiogama's Urato islands.
