The Shiogama Fish Market (unloading docks) has traditionally been the economic center and symbol of this port city. Auctions of raw tuna fish are well worth watching as Shiogama has the biggest unloading of tuna for distribution in Japan due to the high quality catches sought after by buyers all over the country. Nearby is the Shiogama Marine Products Wholesale Markets that cover hundreds of meters of floor space selling every type of fresh fish and seafood at wholesale prices, as well as a large range of processed seafood products.

Accordingly, Shiogama is packed with shops and restaurants serving delicious seafood. As one of the largest tuna unloading points in the world, Shiogama consequently boasts the most sushi restaurants per square kilometer in Japan! Oysters from Matsushima Bay are popular for their firm meat. Shiogama also leads Japan in the production of fish products such us Sasa Kamaboko, made from high quality fish paste and roasted into the shape of sasa(bamboo leaf). A variety of local traditional sweets and Sake are also produced here.
