Located in the center of the Tohoku region facing the Pacific, Shiogama is a port city and the gateway to Matsushima Bay and the Urato group of islands. Set on a wooded hill overlooking the harbor, the magnificent Shiogama Jinja and grounds is the city's historical and cultural center, Shiogama is located in Miyagi Prefecture about 25 kms north along the coastline from the capital Sendai and has a population of approximately 61,000. Tourist ferries depart daily from the harbor for the Urato islands that form part of the city's area.
Shiogama's real history began with the construction of the Jinja to mark its role as State port of nearby Tagajo Castle. However, the name of the city is derived from an ancient salt making ritual unique to the area("shio"=salt, "gama"=cauldron).
Apart from its natural beauty, Shiogama harbor has traditionally been the source of livelihood for the city and its residents.
